Firm hierarchy and the associate role
The rule
The associate owns the model and the process. You are the interface between a partner's judgement and a company's actual numbers. Expect to be asked what you would do with a business, not only how you would model it.
The ladder
Titles differ between firms, but the structure is similar: analysts and associates do the analysis, vice presidents manage the deal day to day, principals and directors lead deals, and partners or managing directors originate, decide and raise funds.
- ·Analyst: 2–3 years, modelling and research.
- ·Associate: 2–3 years, owns the model and diligence workstreams.
- ·Senior associate / VP: runs processes, manages juniors.
- ·Principal / director: leads deals, sits on boards.
- ·Partner / MD: sources deals, investment committee vote, fundraising.
A week as an associate
Time divides between live deals, screening new opportunities and portfolio work. On a live deal you update the model daily, coordinate advisers, prepare investment committee materials and join management meetings. Between deals you screen teasers and support portfolio company boards.

What makes an associate excellent
Accuracy, judgement and ownership. Partners need to trust every number you send. Beyond accuracy, the best associates form opinions: 'this customer concentration worries me, and here is why'. The ability to say what matters, quickly, is what gets associates promoted.
Pay and carry
Associate pay combines base salary and bonus, broadly comparable to or above banking at the same level, with carry participation increasing at senior levels. Carry vests over years and pays only if funds perform, which ties careers to long-term results.
The path in
Most associates join after two to three years of investment banking or consulting, through on-cycle recruiting run by headhunters. Some firms hire directly from undergraduate programmes. Post-MBA hiring exists but is thinner at the associate level.
Hold onto this
- ·Typical path: analyst, associate (often after two years of banking), senior associate, vice president, principal, partner.
- ·Associates run diligence workstreams, management interviews and the board materials.
- ·Your name is on the model; accuracy is the whole reputation.
