The analyst role

The rule

You own a name. You are expected to come back every week with something new, and to know when your thesis has broken. The portfolio manager's attention is the scarcest thing in the building, so lead with the conclusion.

Coverage

An analyst is typically assigned a sector or a list of names — perhaps twenty to forty to monitor and five to fifteen with live or potential positions. You are expected to know these companies better than anyone on the sell side.

The research process

Research combines reading filings and transcripts, building models, talking to management, customers, suppliers and former employees, and gathering data — web traffic, pricing, credit card panels. The goal is a differentiated view on the variable that will move the stock.

  • ·Identify the key driver (e.g. same-store sales, gross margin).
  • ·Estimate it better than consensus.
  • ·Find the catalyst that will reveal the difference.

Sizing and the PM relationship

Analysts recommend and PMs decide. A good recommendation includes size, conviction, upside, downside and the risk it adds to the book. PMs think in risk units, so expressing a trade in terms of expected value and downside makes it easier to act on.

Recommendation in risk terms
Price
$40
Bull case (30%)
$60
Base case (50%)
$48
Bear case (20%)
$30
Expected value
$48.00 (+20%)
Suggested size
3% of NAV, stop at $33

Earnings season and daily rhythm

Mornings start with news and pre-market moves. Earnings seasons compress the work: preview notes before results, rapid analysis after, and a recommendation to add, trim or exit. Between seasons, analysts deepen research and look for new ideas.

Being judged

Analysts are evaluated on the P&L of their ideas, the quality of their research and how well they update. Admitting a broken thesis quickly is valued; anchoring on a losing position is the fastest way to lose a PM's trust.

Hold onto this

  • ·Coverage is narrow: often five to fifteen names, each followed properly.
  • ·The deliverable is a recommendation with size, entry, exit and the number that kills it.
  • ·Updating a view honestly matters more than being right last quarter.
