The consultant role

The rule

You are hired to be useful fast. The job is data gathering, analysis, and turning findings into something a client will act on. The measure is whether the client decided something different because of your work.

The team structure

A project team usually has a partner, a manager or engagement leader, and two to five consultants or associates. Consultants own a workstream — a piece of the problem — from analysis to client presentation.

A typical week

Monday travel to the client, interviews and data gathering midweek, analysis and slide-building, a team problem-solving session, and a progress meeting with the client by Thursday. Fridays are often back in the home office.

  • ·Client interviews and workshops.
  • ·Excel analysis and modelling.
  • ·Building slides with a clear headline per page.
  • ·Presenting findings to client managers.

Hypothesis-driven work

Consultants start with a hypothesis and test it, rather than analysing everything. This saves time and focuses data requests. When the data disagrees, the hypothesis changes.

Mix shift to lower-margin products

Mix shift explains 70% of decline

Career progression

Consultants become managers after roughly two to three years, then associate partners and partners. Promotion depends on problem-solving, client impact and, increasingly, the ability to build relationships and sell work.

What makes someone excellent

Excellent consultants synthesise: they reduce complex analysis to a clear message and recommendation. They also manage clients well, anticipating questions and building trust with people whose cooperation is needed.

Hold onto this

  • ·Typical week: client site, interviews, analysis, and a slide you own.
  • ·Travel and hours are real and are a fair question to ask in the interview.
  • ·Recruiters look for impact without authority — you must convince people who do not report to you.
